I really enjoy creating custom jewelry for special occasions. Tell me the occasion, show me what you’re wearing, and I’ll custom design the perfect piece of jewelry to finish your look.
Such was the case when my former high school classmate, Resa Stewart contacted me about creating a custom jewelry design for her daughter Ty who was getting ready for senior prom.
"I was so pleased with the necklace design. When I saw it, I was like yes, yes, yes!!! I would recommend anyone that has a daughter or that has a special occasion coming up to let you design there jewelry. They won't go wrong!" ~ Resa Stewart - Americus, GA
For her prom dress, Ty selected a beautiful, flowing sheath dress with a beaded bodice and front split in red from kissdresses.com. The bodice of this strapless gown is covered in crystals.
The Custom Jewelry Design Idea
Since crystals adorned the dress at the top, I knew letting my imagine run wild with a complex design would not let this dress. She needed a necklace for sure, but not a highly dramatic piece. A fitting custom jewelry design would be a simple, yet elegant necklace that enhanced this dresses appeal without clashing and making it look tacky.
When I saw it, I was like yes, yes, yes!!!!
No Sketch for this Custom Jewelry Design
Oddly enough, I didn’t sketch this piece. I felt the design as soon as I saw the dress. I knew what I wanted to make for Ty. I knew how the necklace would look and how it would flow with the dress.
Materials that Make Sense
When I saw the dress, I knew silver chain would be the foundation for the necklace. Silver chain always seems to pair well with crystals used heavily on dresses created with bold-colored fabrics. And, because the dress was top-heavy with crystal embellishments, what better adornments than crystal beads!
I chose a large crystal briolette as the center piece for the necklace. The briolette was flanked on each side by round, faceted crystal beads. Silver and crystal combined to make a beautiful, yet understated necklace.
My hope was when she put the entire look together, that it would look as though the necklace dripped crystals and to create the stunning beaded bodice.
I couldn’t wait to see this necklace on Ty. Her mom loved it!
“I was so pleased with the necklace design,” Resa said. “When I saw it, I was like yes, yes, yes!”
Happy mom has a happy daughter who now has a piece of jewelry created especially for her that she can wear again and again. It'll never go out of style.
